Without a doubt the KLB Open this year was the biggest Landboard and Buggy event I have ever been too. The second round of the European Championships was hosted in Berlin, Germany on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of October and I was invited down to help be part of a three man judging team. For the second event running we had over 50 riders leading us to run the first ever trials for the freestyle event. With the top 8 riders from the last competition advancing straight into the main event it was down to the rest of the riders to fight it out for the last 8 remaining places promising to be a spectacular event.
I had travelled down on Thursday night with Flysurfer teamrider Craig Sparkes and current British buggy champion Dave Roberts, where we arrived on site for 9am. The event location was an airport in Berlin-Tempelhof which had ceased operating in 2008 and was open to the public making it the perfect inland flying spot.
Having helped set up the Flysurfer tent each morning I was able to go for a hours kiting before the spot got busy with other kiters and 1,000s of spectators, making the most of the tarmac runways. It brought back memories of my old local which was always fun! Wind conditions always started light which suited my 18m Speed 4 Lotus perfectly and gradually built throughout the day.
On the final day I managed to get a good 3+ hours riding done during the race intervals; putting on a little freestyle demo in the competition arena and then after the event finished I had a super light wind session, trying to land some new low wind tricks such as a Shifty 3 foot out. It was cool to see some of the juniors trying some low wind passes during this session also!
Back to the competition where we saw plenty of action. Conditions were sometimes a little sketchy at points however it provided enough to see some top quality riding. A mixture of wakestyle and old school was on display with Laurent Guyot and Emmanuel Norman from Flysurfer showing once again they were on top of their game! It was also good to see Joey Oldenbürger mixing it up with the top guys after an impressive display of new school tricks.

It was also good to see the buggy riders getting in on the European Championship action for the first time with UK rider Craig Sparkes coming out on top, a massive challenge from Guillaume Girard from France in 2nd followed by Dave Roberts from the UK in 3rd.

Overall a very impressive event and I just want to say a massive get well soon to Andor, a local rider, who experienced a severe crash during the trials and is still in the hospital in a coma.
